Journey to Light: 108 Sun Salutations to Celebrate Seasonal Change

with Laura Roberts & Stretch Yoga Trainees

Why 108 Sun Salutations?

In the ancient yogic tradition, practicing 108 Sun Salutations with the changing seasons symbolically marks the transition from darkness to light and fosters personal growth. But why 108? This number holds profound significance in yogic and Hindu traditions.

"One" symbolises the unity and interconnectedness of everything, "zero" represents emptiness and potential, and "eight" signifies infinity and the boundless nature of the universe and the self.

Together, these concepts encapsulate the entirety of existence. The number 108 appears frequently in sacred texts such as the Upanishads and has been integrated into various spiritual practices over centuries.

Repeating the Sun Salutation 108 times creates a moving meditation unlike any other. The rhythmic flow of this practice facilitates a deep dive into the powerful, unwavering connection between mind, body, and breath. Many practitioners find this ritual cleansing, uplifting, and incredibly rewarding.

Join us for this Winter Solstice celebration

Practicing 108 Sun Salutations on the winter solstice holds deep symbolic and spiritual significance in yoga and other spiritual traditions. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and marks the transition from darkness to increasing light. Similarly, the practice of 108 Sun Salutations symbolises moving from darkness (ignorance) to light (knowledge and wisdom).

The winter solstice is a time when nature is at its lowest ebb of energy, but it also marks the turning point toward longer days and more light. By practicing 108 Sun Salutations, we align ourselves with the natural rhythms of the earth and draw inspiration from nature's cycles.

The rhythmic flow of the practice helps to quiet the mind, cultivate focus, and deepen the connection between mind, body, and breath. You'll cultivate discipline, endurance, and resilience. The practice challenges both the body and mind, fostering personal growth and spiritual development.
